Bristol is home. Which means for a vessel lying in the Floating Harbour, at Bristol Marina or up at Portishead Quays, there is usually no meaningful travel charge, and a lift-out slot can be worked around without a two-hour drive each way.

What is different about surveying boats here

The Floating Harbour is fresh water

This genuinely changes what a surveyor looks for, and it is routinely overlooked. A boat that has spent years in the Floating Harbour has been sitting in fresh to brackish water rather than salt, and that has three consequences.

Galvanic activity is generally less aggressive, so anodes may look deceptively healthy compared with a boat off a salt-water berth — which is fine until she is moved to a coastal marina and the picture changes quickly. Fouling is different in character: less barnacle growth, more weed and slime, and antifoul chosen for salt water often underperforms. And moisture readings on a GRP hull in fresh water do not read the same as they would in salt, so any comparison against a previous survey needs to account for where the boat has been lying.

Most importantly, if you are buying a Floating Harbour boat intending to take her to sea, the survey should be read with that move in mind. Skin fittings, anodes and the bonding arrangement all deserve closer attention than they would if she were staying put.

The tidal range dictates the diary

The Bristol Channel has the second largest tidal range in the world — around 13 to 14 metres on big springs at Avonmouth. Practically, that means lift-out and locking windows are narrow and dictated by tide rather than convenience. Booking a survey here is as much about the tide table as the calendar, and turning up on the wrong state of tide wastes everyone's day.

Being based locally is the real advantage. Knowing which yards can lift what tonnage, which have a tidal gate to work around, and how far ahead their slots go in spring saves a great deal of wasted effort.

Silt, and what it hides

The Severn estuary carries an enormous silt load, and boats on estuary and river moorings sit in it. Silt in the bilge, silt behind linings, silt packed around the stern gear. On a steel hull it holds moisture against the plate exactly where you cannot see it, so bilges must be pumped and cleaned before a survey is worth much. On any hull it clogs seacocks and strainers.

Canal and river craft

Sharpness and the Gloucester & Sharpness Canal bring a steady stream of narrowboats, Dutch barges and steel motor cruisers. These are a different survey from a coastal GRP yacht: the central question is plate thickness, taken as ultrasonic readings on a grid and compared against the original scantlings. Most insurers require those readings on a steel hull, and many want them at shorter intervals than on GRP.

The failure mode people miss on these boats is corrosion working from the inside out — beneath the cabin lining, under spray foam insulation, or in a bilge with a concrete ballast bed over bare steel.
